Drow Racial Preview – Lore & Stats
By TrailTurtle @ November 29, 2012 at 12:14pm

Warped cousins of the surface elves, the drow are a race of subterranean dark elves, their cruelty matched only by their talent for magic. The drow are a calculating blight on Faerûn, plotting to enslave and conquer in the name of their goddess Lolth, the Spider Queen – but some drow choose to become heroes.
A few drow reject the evil of their homeland, and leave the drow city of Menzoberranzan for the surface world. These brave renegades can be Neverwinter’s most loyal defenders, fighting for acceptance among races that often hate and distrust them.
Lately the defenders of Neverwinter have noticed that drow have been increasingly active in the area. Identified by renegades as members of House Xorlarrin, these drow are searching for an entrance to Gauntlgrym, an ancient lost city of dwarves. With the treasures stored there, House Xorlarrin could become a dangerous threat to Neverwinter.

Whether in the dark service of Lolth or under the banner of Neverwinter, drow are intelligent and have a natural talent for magic, such that even their foot soldiers can draw on the power of Darkfire. All drow characters have this power: Every time a drow attacks, there’s a chance it’ll debuff the target’s Defense.
In addition, drow do not sleep as humans do. Instead, they enter a trance for a few hours, disdaining the eight hours of unconsciousness humans need. In Neverwinter, this is reflected in the racial ability Trance, which allows all drow characters to recover faster at campfires.
In addition, because of their inborn grace and force of personality, all drow characters get +2 Dexterity and +2 Charisma.

With their natural dexterity and talent for magic, drow adventurers will be a powerful force for good when Neverwinter launches in 2013. Keep checking back for more previews!
(Please remember that Neverwinter is still in development, and some of these elements could change.)

the only surface drow are the elves or did you not know the history of the drow. The dark skinned surface traitors are what i think you mean, and sure they might be a force of good, but i shall be the bad apple to corrupt them *evil grin*.
tilvius @ Mar 6th, 2013 7:31AM
I will be a Drow! =) Always have been! Have been a fan of Drizzt and his novels. Never wanted to be him. Just loved the Drow culture.
mok33 @ Feb 26th, 2013 7:34PM
So if you want to play a drow you must wait 2 months after launch or spend 200 bucks. Nice.
farslide @ Feb 11th, 2013 7:33PM
Drow - Pronunciation - Ed (Greenwood, natch) stated the pronunciation is okay either way and reflects where in Faerun you come from. Though it's lost to me after these many years which places use which.
mok33
How about the word drowsy?
mok33
Or drown?
ultimusmagus @ Feb 11th, 2013 12:03PM
There should be a choice in what stat bonuses we receive that are relevant to the Drow. Besides the 2 Dex/Char (good for bard/pal/sor/fs) racial bonus there should also be a 2 Int/Dex choice to reflect their high affinity to magic (wizard classes), unless there is an innate bonus to Int added to stat rolls (in which case a Con drop would be inevitable). Even 2 Int/Cha would be acceptable in order to give wizards a little boost.
onconase @ Jan 21st, 2013 2:27PM
love it XD
kyrotep @ Jan 19th, 2013 2:24PM
Charisma huh? Considering we don't have a sorc or pally, we don't have any class currently that uses charisma for a main stat.
guinnjaguar @ Jan 16th, 2013 7:19AM
Maybe I'm setting myself up to fall, but I can't stop getting excited to play a game with proper Drow/Dark Elves and all the lore and intrigue that surrounds them. I might actually read quest text again..lol. Can you imagine if in an expansion they release a weaponmaster class, unless the trickster rogue kind of covers that role somewhat already. I've missed EQ style dark elves for a long time now, sick of all the night elves and anime variants that saturate mmos these days.
avon4te @ Jan 15th, 2013 5:47AM
Drow race rules ...... Drizzt
highmagether @ Dec 29th, 2012 1:39AM

highmagether @ Dec 29th, 2012 1:37AM

highmagether

archem22 @ Dec 17th, 2012 2:08PM
its Drow like Cow, ignore the troll.
ravin
Actually, both pronunciations are accepted, just one's a little more accepted that the other. I prefer Drow like crow, sounds better.
nightmask32 @ Dec 16th, 2012 8:03AM
Drow like crow.
mok33
Wrong.
lordjustice72 @ Dec 13th, 2012 3:55PM
Is it Drow like cow, or Drow like crow?
thefatbog12 @ Dec 12th, 2012 3:39AM
I'm just hoping that the Underdark will be available I really want to hit up good ol' Blingdenstone But there is going to be a heep of drow players out there (and deep gnomes if cryptic puts them in)
machibello @ Dec 11th, 2012 4:52AM

All im reading is loyal fanbase to DnD players, what you all dont know and Id like to save years of your life. Is the Owners that somehow obtained this DnD neverwinter is PWI (Perfect World International), owned by China and very greedy. Their famous jewel "Perfect World" mmo is beyond corrupt. They have granted great music and custimization. They fail to bring you legitimate updates when they patch, what they've done, what they're doing. What they do aim for is your wallet. They have constant items on sale "packs" at one time you'd get a "great" item for a mere 20 dollar fee in their 20 packs, now you can buy 200 packs and get NOTHING, 200 literal dollars. That's a minor example. People that have spend money on their sales for quck xp in their "boutique" they counter that with a following patch for any cash shoppers that stock up to gain money. This is frequant and constant. Easily readable on rebiews on the PWI webpages. You will find some "defending" against example "me" but I less rage. I call those opposers actual employees, for no one "enjoys" paying for whatever service to have it completely rip offed the folloing week by the supplying company. Abd to see a chinese company own an american game wtf, we aint slaves. Word of caution, watch your wallets, compare their b/s prices to an american 15/dollar a month MMO. You need 40-60 to be AVERAGE in pwi. It is very deceiving and I've played multiple MMOs, Dark Age of Camelot was the best. These guys stealing a child hood paper game for their chinese greed, Ill fund my arsenal instead. Chinas going to far and it's even taking the finances on our fun games. I beg you to check the finances on their DnD game PWI is fkin neutral evil...to the fkin T, and what's funny? They don't even understand alignments lol
sarrivin
While it seems it might be different this time (realize that PWI also publishes Torchlight 2 game, which is great, is VERY affordable and without microtransactions), it's good that you posted such comment. We want to know that Cryptic has full freedom and trust of PWI, who will let them do their job the best they can and suppor them. Because what works in Asia won't work in USA and especially Europe. We have different tradition and expectations, different culture and systems of thinking. That's why I think PWI should study Turbine's DDO and put their whole trust into Cryptic, as they're veterans in west MMORPG market now. In fact, PWI should not need to even interfere, just make sure they publish, support and simply profit with Cryptic. But your post gets a bit xenophopic towards China, and that's going a bit too far here.
entropyrat
What in the what did you just say? I didn't understand any of that mangled mess.
ghrys
This post is very racist. It's fine to criticise practices of a business that you don't care for, but to suggest that these practices you dislike are the result of the company being Chinese is simply ignorant, and largely frowned on in this day and age. Games are created to take money from the consumer and put it in the hands of the owner, and American companies do the very same thing as Chinese, Japanese, Korean, European, and Russian companies. Some companies tend to over-exploit consumers to the detriment of game balance and fun, they then lose their fans, and the game dies off. The market takes care of itself, and the most successful companies will look towards the long term success of their product. I think a lot of the fanbase anticipating this game including myself, were fans of Neverwinter Nights which was a game aimed towards a longer lifespan, (and required only the initial investment in the game to play,) and are hoping for a gameplay experience similar. I would also guess that like myself, the decision to make this game a free MMO-style game has these same fans very cautious, especially given the other perfect world products. However, the makers have stated an awareness of what made the original game successful, so there is optimism, that perhaps this game might not suffer the truely glaring flaws of the pay-to-win system.
shin2zen
Ya know, I'm not a huge fan of PWI. But I gotta say, DESPITE THIS, I really love this game. It is done well in so many ways. I've played many of the other PWI games and this one just done't have the same commercialized feel. I think Cryptic has done a great job with it and it appears PWI is getting smart and not laying the CHA-CHING smackdown on the game. I'm fairly optimistic at this point.
wesgar
what you see, is an eastern culture micro transaction method, implemented in the west. this aricain's reaction is fairly typical of what they are going to get, when attempting to fund the game by charging a very few, a very large sum of money, allowing the majority to play for free. The GOOD thing is, that it looks like PWE is willing to experiment with the 'western culture' of micro transactions, where you charge smaller amounts in hopes that MORE people actually finance the game. I honestly think that you are going to see 'both' methods of financing the game in NeverWinter. it will be up to us the consumer, as to how we vote with our 'consumer votes' (read dollars, pounds, yen etc.) as to what we see in the future... how many $35 Honey Badgers are we going to see purchased vs a companion you can buy for $5? Decisions like these are going to set the stage for tomorrow's game. G'luck! to us all!
akiva @ Dec 5th, 2012 1:24PM
The Surface Drow are good. The Underdark Drow are Evil. The Drow portrayed in the game are Surface Drow so good makes sense.

sarrivin
There is no such thing as surface drow, there are rare (in paper, original DnD) immigrants who resent evil ways of their kin. So they've fled and try how they can to survive. But many just resent matriarchy, their goddess Lolth, or were too evil even for their own Underdark standards and that's why they're on the surface, so better watch out ;).
bighalsy @ Dec 4th, 2012 10:43PM
Drow...a force for good? Really? Seriously? Has this game sunk to that already? I guess the 666 levels of the Abyss will just be one giant day care center for adventurers who have kids, huh? Sigh. I knew a real successor to NWN was too good to be true.
kharzon
Eilistraee .... Nuff said.
entropyrat
Eilistraee is a dead deity in 4th edition, Kharzon.
n1ghtm4sk
And what about Vhaeraun?!
mok33
Things have changed with 4th edition.
shredstallion33 @ Dec 4th, 2012 3:19AM
Cool! I'm gonna be a paladin of lolth and do good deeds for everybody.
e1im
Ahem... you DO know that Lolth is evil, do you?
mok33
I'd like some of the drugs you're having please.
ianwagner
They will make an anti paladin.. And since Lolth is evil, that would mean they're good.. right?
slowshield
Thanks!
jhiieri @ Dec 3rd, 2012 8:41PM
Since I was a Drow in the original gold box NWN, I hope the race is still portrayed as it should be. I'm looking forward to reconnecting with the intricacies and subtlety that makes the "Evil" in Drow what drew me to that race a long time ago....
adwillliams2112 @ Dec 3rd, 2012 1:22PM
The Drow should be an evil race period....One exception to the rule, We know who :-) shouldn't allow hundreds of "good: drow to roam the streets.
mok33
There is more than one exception to the rule though they may not be as well known. Liriel Baenre is another example.
ghrys
I think a more accurate statement should be that anyone that plays a drow should get to understand the intense cultural influences that foster an evil outlook on things, and have a decent background explination for why their character is here and doing whatever they are doing, good -or- evil. The implication that drow have an alignment determined by their nature like fiends, and celestials I believe to be incorrect. It is the world they grow up in that is the primary source of their worldview.
mok33
Also to add... 4th edition has changed things quite a bit. Drow are a lot more common on the surface than ever before. They can still be evil on the surface, just for different reasons.
tuukkasalonen @ Dec 2nd, 2012 1:13PM
Mhm. As I chose long time ago i'll be drow rogue and as somebody said BG:EE fills the hole... But we are doomed to meet millions of drows!
shredstallion33 @ Dec 2nd, 2012 10:56AM
Baldur's gate EE is filling the hole......for now.
