The Great Weapon Fighter in Neverwinter
By Pinpointerror @ January 9, 2013 at 7:30am

Role: Damage Dealer and Secondary Defender
Some fighters rely on spells, others prefer tricks and illusions. You believe that all encounters can be resolved quickly with the swift swing of a two-handed weapon. The thrill of taking on multiple enemies at once drives you into battle far ahead of your party. And if necessary, you will not hesitate to sacrifice yourself to ensure your party’s survival.

The fearless Great Weapon Fighter in Neverwinter
First to Fight, Last to Retreat
You believe that shields are cumbersome and deter your ability to fight. Your innate instinct allows you to drive your weapon deep into the hearts of your foes with deadly precision and timing. In the heat of battle, your versatile combat ability allows you to perform different roles within the party. While your defender absorbs the brunt of the damage, you fight to protect your other party members from ambush. And if your defender is down, you are the first to absorb incoming damage keeping your allies from harm.

Surrounded? One swift swing will resolve any encounters!
Versatility and Survivability
The Great Weapon Fighter can be effective in any combat situation. Abilities such as Avalanche of Steel can be used to clear crowds with area-of-effect damage when your party is overrun. To gain the upper hand in combat, lead the charge by using your Slam ability to slow enemies allowing your party to finish them with ease. If your party is surrounded, use the mighty battle chant, Roar, to knock groups back for a vital second wind.
In desperate situations, the Great Weapon Fighter can cast Daring Shout to mark nearby enemies – the stronger the enemies, the more defenses he gains to fend them off while his party recovers. Finally, use Sprint, a rechargeable Utility Power, to close the distance on anyone attempting to escape their fate and deal the finishing blow!

Survivability and toughness defines a brave Great Weapon Fighter
The Essential Dungeon Party Member
Versatility and survivability are keys to being an effective Great Weapon Fighter. With devastating damage-dealing ability and survival powers, you will be an essential member of your dungeon party. Stay resolute and lead your party to victory when Neverwinter launches!

How does someone from the UK get hold of a beta key? as the PC gamer issue seems to be for the US only
amazingproton
Beta keys are issued to people who Subscribe to Champions Online, Pre-ordered Torchlight 2, or subscribe to Star Trek Online... PC Gamer keys was just for a Mount... nothing more special... Beta keys are better explained in the FAQ.
mok33
Actually the PC Gamer key was for both a mount and beta code.
danman339555 @ Jan 14th, 2013 7:36PM
So this game is not Dungeons and Dragons then?
mok33
Depends on what you mean by that. It's more MMO than it is PnP.
shadow71
Ha Ha you really just didn't ask that question did you? This game is backed by R.A. Salvatore and Wizards of the Coast <--D
vantarq

poriah @ Jan 13th, 2013 7:43PM
So did anyone notice the obvious hints to other classes in the final seconds of the video and that the rogue of the group was *unlocking* a chest next to a ranger....just sayin. Also this is a theory but I see alot of people complaining about the damage this class does being so high and I wonder if the specific characters in the video where higher level to display a higher amount of damage to better persuade players that WANT to play a heavy hitting greatsword weilding class. :l I myself will always roll a rogue and if the great weapon fighter does in fact hit harder then me, then it shouldn't matter to much because I AM A ROGUE.
lucha25 @ Jan 13th, 2013 3:19PM

chrisansler @ Jan 12th, 2013 7:14PM
So, looks like we have info on 2 styles of fighters now, interesting. They're also similar to the type of "recommended" styles for character creating in the 4E Player's Handbook. Lets hope for a "custom" of each class as well where you can pick your powers in true D
chrisansler
...in true D
chrisansler
well that is odd, It is cutting off the end of my comment, and the beginning of my attempted correction. I thought it was a character limit thing but apparently not. Without a way to delete my comments to try to fix this without a long string of repeated posts I'm not sure what to do.

When will this be released ive been sitting on my hands for months waiting :( lol
bolfam40212
Unfortunately the most they have released about a release date is that it will come out the first quarter of 2013. So it could be any time between now and the end of march =C. Hope this helps.
mok33
It's going to be later than that. We haven't had a closed and open beta yet. Sometime in 2013.

bolfam40212 @ Jan 11th, 2013 11:35AM
I both DMed and played innumerable 3.5 paper campaigns and I just have to say to all you people complaining saying this is not DnD that you need to get over it. It's an mmo and though I love 3.5 DnD the abilites and feats of paper DnD are lame in comparison to the flashyness of moves in MMO's now a days. If they were to make it exactly like DnD, A. it would not be an MMO and B. they would fail to even come close to competing with the other mmos on the market. That said, as DnD fan with probably years of 3.5 play time under my belt, I think they have done a good job of keeping it DnD and still an appealing MMO.
amazingproton
to add to this is the Foundry... where you as a DM should know mostly about this... it's the ability to create your own dungeons, create your own monsters within the dungeons, and have fun with it!
grumpyfitz
your a real tard aren't you! nobody is saying they want them to make a paper version of dnd. This isn't the first attempt of making a dnd based mmo, it's been happening since 1998. I just want to see it done right with open character development, choosing feats, abliities, stats, not like the games that are out now where there is no choice is any of that and everyone of the same class has the same gear at the same lvl, games like that are LAME! there are enough of those WOW copycats out there, I want a real game. I couldn't care less about the "flashyness of moves". I think there's a much better chance of "competing with other mmos" if they make a game different from WOW and most of the MMOs since WOW.
nordveig @ Jan 11th, 2013 7:29AM
Don't forget the bard.
grumpyfitz @ Jan 10th, 2013 10:07PM
why can't someone come out with a real DnD game? The closest I've seen was the first couple years of Everquest 1 I'd much rather see something like that rather than the same old crap that EVERY OTHER MMO already has!!
bolfam40212
If they made it exactly like paper dnd, even the awesomeness of 3.5, then they would not do well competing with other mmo's. The fact that compared to other mmo's a rangers multi shot or fighters whilrwind attack feats are lame abilities compared to the flashy ones in mmo's would be a mager turn off to the mmo audience they are going for.
snupalek
Have you tried DDO? It is actually quite close to PnP.
grumpyfitz @ Jan 10th, 2013 10:04PM
why can't someone come out with a real D
blanetruesilver @ Jan 10th, 2013 9:51PM
Obviously they are not going to use the round based attack system from DnD. It looks more like a Diablo game - bigger is better. That's okay - hack n slash is always welcome. Can't wait to play and hope they have a large area of PVP where groups can run into each other and dance or walk-on by.
grumpyfitz
LOL, you can't have turn based attacks in a live game
ch80 @ Jan 10th, 2013 4:24PM
Ok i'm seeing a lot of negative comments here... I'm pretty sure none of you have tried out the game yet. There is an age old saying that applies here, "dont judge a book by it's cover". For those of you who complain about the flashing damage, im fairly sure that there will be an option as in most mmo's to turn off the visual damage numbers. Also those complaining about the game not being "realistic" when the fu** have you ever gone on a quest in real life and slayed dragons or swung a sword around in heavy armor more than four or five times without getting gassed and nearly passing out. This is a fantasy game in a fantasy realm where you can cast magic and yes do whirlwind sword attacks with a sword almost as massive as yourself. Have fun, escape from reality, and pull your thumb from your butt so you can return your hand to the wasd keys and get lost in a world that deserves a try before you bash all over it.
linainversel
thets ok but you dint answer to may problem. Clearly you've never played real D
shredstallion33 @ Jan 10th, 2013 3:33PM
I can't really use the term realistic when it comes to video games but the combat Animations look a bit cartoony, the dailies do anyway.
amazingproton
if that's the only thing stopping you from playing, then you have a sad existance for a life.
churchofshar @ Jan 10th, 2013 11:04AM
Also had to add that I'm digging everything in the background as well. Dungeon looks awesomely lit. These graphics combined with players imaginations and the foundry is going to add up to some amazing gameplay.
guardianvalour @ Jan 10th, 2013 1:09AM
It is nice to see a new video about another class, or perhaps subset of a class (I'm not sure which it would be considered?) for the game. I really dislike the look (and even the idea) of the daily power Spinning Strike. The animation for that move looks ridiculous and conjures up imagines of old animated wonder woman costume changes, or a player imitating a tornado with a sword. Regardless, this post is not meant to trash the class or game, I just wanted to say that I think that daily power looks terrible. I hope that everyone has been having a good new year so far.
bighalsy @ Jan 9th, 2013 7:24PM
Ridiculous damage numbers, arcade style combat, sigh I knew a NWN successor was too good to be true once PE got involved. I'm sure this'll go over like gangbusters in asia but it's not what real CRPG NWN fans want here.
jakke31
Man you havent even tried the game out, one their not always gunna do what fans want, 3rd how do you know what fans want, 4th i think its just stupid to complain about the game before it comes out when you havent tried it :) just saying
alsaroth
Well, I had hoped as well, that combat wouldn't be as... flashy. And about the high damage numbers... I went over to see the vid of the control wizard and compared the numbers and thought: "OP!". But then again, mauybe the fighters will be relying on a lot of healing and have low resistances? And maybe I shouldn't think of only Hp-damage, I m,ean, control wizards are m aybe anout control, buffs ect. firstly and damage second? But if theese fighters have a lot of defense as well, then you won't find me in PvP.
linainversel
Dear Jakke 31 Maybe he was GM on a Real DnD game or siple Payed DnD More the 20 yair Orgginaly this is An RPG whit a D 20 sistem not a hack and slash game.
mok33
Damage numbers are going to be buffed and nerfed over and over during the course of alpha and beta. I wouldn't worry too much about that right now.
eljacko56
While I respect your purist instincts, this game is not intended as an actual successor to Neverwinter Nights. It contains similar elements, particularly the focus on player-created content, but to treat it as another entry to the franchise is just setting yourself up for disappointment. I'm confident that Neverwinter will stand on its own merits. Having said that, I don't think the combat of the original NWN series is worth defending. I know it's just my opinion, but the combat was easily the weakest part of NWN for me. It was boring, slow, and padded the game out to such a degree that playing it became an exercise in endurance.
